Preface

The last 2.5 years were the most dramatic in my short career. They were full of drama, but even more full with good people. I’ve learned so much from the ~40 amazing people that surrounds me and from working with them. They helped me change my view on startups from a place that connects people and technology, to something full of purpose, creativity and philosophy. I felt that my best way to show them gratitude is by writing down what i’ve learned from them.

I want to add special thanks to Tomer Dvir, my friend who took me with him to this amazing journey, and put up with me in my bad moods and pushed me to grow every day, and to Adi Zellner, that with her philosopher views and her ability to argue them always, challenge me to rethink what I think I know every time possible.

Learn from mistakes

The ice forming on the plane window was frightening. Even though the plane was in line to take part in the anti-freeze fun, I was still imagining how that tiny ice drop is going to cause the plane to crash. I was thinking about the stress level of the person who is going to invent the next new plane, or anyone else from the airline industry. I was thinking about all the plane-crash videos and flying accidents on TV shows, and I started to get uncomfortable on my seat. “Thank god I am in the Software world where we have room for mistakes!”, I’ve thought to myself.

The flight went well, and much to my surprise, I’ve survived. It took me a cab ride home and quick wikipedia read to made me understand, that I might not have been dead, but I was dead wrong! Flying industry is full of mistakes. The only difference is, that in that industry mistakes cost lives, and a lot. But the bright side of it is that every mistake is used as a universal lesson for everyone willing to learn.

To make the bright side even clearer, the International Civil Aviation Organization that is responsible for the development of the air transport world while ensuring safety and orderly growth, is focused on preventing accidents and not determining liability. The current de-icing process I’ve experienced while sitting in my chair inside that snow covered plane, was built on many important lessons. The flying industry wouldn’t have been the same without this process.

Thankfully, in Soluto there is no way we can physically harm our users by mistake. Nevertheless, we do have a big responsibility for our users and that makes mistakes that affect users something we always want to avoid. We search for a way we can make mistakes, without affecting our users’ satisfaction our products and with technology in general. I guess that’s a topic for another post, but when mistakes do happen, and sadly sometimes they do, we will try to learn from them and find what we did wrong as well as and also share that knowledge with everyone that can benefit from it.
